His poet-protagonists tend to be impoverished outcasts, cut off from the literary mainstream often, there is little to distinguish them from criminals. Almost all Bolaño's fiction concerns itself with the lives of writers, especially poets. The first is the milieu its characters inhabit. ![]() ![]() Two things in particular mark The Savage Detectives as Bolaño's work. Its roots are autobiographical: Bolaño lived in Mexico during this period (his family moved there when he was 15) and was the founder of a short-lived "punk-surrealist" movement called infrarrealismo. Bestselling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God we misunderstand His holiness. She says, “If God can’t sin against me, that means that all of His dealings towards me are good. I also love how Jackie reminds us that understanding God’s holiness changes the way we see Him. We can look to God as the author and perfecter of our faith, and know that He will finish the work He has started in us. As believers, pursuing holiness feels like an impossible thing to do, but it’s not something that should produce self-centered shame. In today’s show, Jackie and I chat all about the holiness of God, what it means, and why it’s important to understand. She recently released her newest book Holier Than Thou which I absolutely devoured! Jackie Hill Perry is back for The Happy Hour #428! At times, I almost felt like reading two different books: the first half dragged and was boggled down with confusing information about the range of shadows and the alterations one can make as well as the backstory of Vince, Charlie, and Posey but by the time the second half arrived, I was so hooked I couldn’t put Charlie’s story down as it all unravelled magnificently with plot twists that left me shook. What I will say is that Book of Night takes quite a while to pick up its pace. I can already tell that this will make readers both put it on their Best of 2022 list and beg Holly Black for a sequel (because that ending. ![]() ![]() What a premise, right? The 12-song set at The Stone in San Francisco featured nearly every song that would go on to appear on their debut album, Kill 'Em All, except for "Hit the Lights." The opening song, "The Mechanix," was reworked from Dave Mustaine's version once the band tapped Hammett, and would get retitled "The Four Horsemen."
